One would think that a multi-cultural multi-gaming forum is the perfect place to raise the issue since it is an um.... gaming!!! problem.
But I am told this is not the case. LOL

Well said PappaWheely. We don't care cos it doesn't affect us. And if we catch our own sons talking like that by age 12 then that's just fine and dandy too.

I don't care wheys. Somebody else who agrees with me has already seen this.

This has nothing to do with my personal life. It is an opinion based on my perception of decency.
I must admit that I was surprised at the amount of negativity this generated.
But I see now that a manifesto such as what is on the NRNS front page cannot be taken literally.

And you can say what you want to say without the word rape.

If you see my earler post, you'll see I've apologised for that.
But that's quite right, of course everybody will jump on the ONE bad word choice I've made. Even though I'm contesting  a term and an entire mindset used by millions, you will use one thing said one time by one person (me) to prove me wrong hey. That's great logic right there.
Also I called nobody that, I said LIKE a delinquent....

If most really didn't care, there wouldn't be so many negative replies on my OP.

Most people wouldn't have bothered to reply.

Have you wondered why everybody thinks its so important to tell me I'm wrong?

Most people will forget it yes. Not all.
If you live your life in resigned apathy then that is fine. But that is not how I choose to live mine.

We are always encouraged to stand up for what we believe in. The funny thing is that as soon as we do, one half tells us we're wrong and the other half tells us not to bother because we'll never change anything.

Thats the really sad thing.

Dr Evil, your second post is less angry. Thank you  :P

The problem is always that pretty much 99% of people who can make a positive difference, think that their difference will be too small or insignificant. Or they just don't have the courage, or they think that it is not the time or place. Or they are too tired.

For me, I said what I wanted to say. And in spite of all the negativity I got from doing that, I am glad that I did.
I am old and ugly enough to know how small we really are.
But I also know that even this tiny small little insignificant post in the massive cyberuniverse could have a positive effect.
Even if it is on a subject that is seemingly insignificant - all things have the potential to have a domino effect, whether positive or negative.

If just ONE other person reads this post and decides they are going to discourage the use of that term somewhere in gaming, I have already made a difference with what I've said.

@Pongo - look at what I've said and then look at what you've said.
I am against the use of the word rape. You say its no problem.
You even used it trivially in this thread again, fully aware that I would hate it.
In which universe am I the bad guy? I am sorry if you found the word pig-headed offensive. Where I come from it means 'obstinate'. Perhaps in your culture it has a more negative meaning. Does rape have a less negative meaning in your culture than in mine?
As for my delinquent retard remark, it was a poor choice of words and I apologize. I should have said a delinquent ignorant instead.

NO my name is not that, Xenalite.
Just because I am standing up for what I believe  does not make me a "whiney little lady person."

DR-EVIL,
one would think that I just asked NRNS to single handedly change the world.
Yet I didn't even expressly request that people STOP using the word. I was merely pointing out how I feel about it. And I gave possible reasons to support why I might feel that way. Because I knew I'd get a lot of pigheaded replies about it.
I didn't ask for a BAN on the word. We're not a bunch of babies and everybody can speak as they choose.
But I have the right to voice my opinion. People have a right to know that they do not have to talk like delinquent retards to be part of a gaming community.

The word in question is not camping, or pwnage. It is RAPE.
Yet somehow, I'M the one with the problem.

I also game to relax and have fun. But I'm not so caught up in my escapist crap that I can't see the wood for the trees.

Thanks oldman.

It is good to know that somebody else also sees it for what it is.

I mean, I've been gaming for some years myself and I've always hated the term being used in gaming, even though I'm well aware of the context.
So even though I posted the thread after something mentioned on these forums, I'm not referring exclusively to NRNS at all.
Like I've said, I see it used a lot more on other servers.

But you are right, there are other expressions that do just as well. Wouldn't it be great if derogatory language could one day be totally eradicated from gamer culture :)

You're still missing the point.

I did not complain about the rape term because somebody on here was using it.
I've been wanting to make a post about it for a long time. I mentioned it here because it is a term used everywhere in gaming, EVERYWHERE.
I know that on any other servers forum, I'll get shot down about it even more than I was shot down about it here.
I was not targeting NRNS saying 'you guys do this, you guys do that!'
I thought that on NRNS of all places, I might actually find somebody who agrees with me. Otherwise I would have left it.

I'm being seriously misunderstood here.
It is a stupid term. Putting spawn or base in front of it doesn't make it any better.
I get everybody's argument about context. I just don't agree.

Oh and I didn't make the post about camping. I gave my opinion because somebody else brought it up. I never mention anything about it in-game, because I too like to have fun. Although you guys probably don't believe that about me now.

I am sad that my post came across as an attack on NRNS. It was meant to be a discussion about a term in gaming as a whole, not an attack on you guys.

Look folks, it is just an opinion. One that is supposed to make people think.

We all know we are playing a game, and that it isn't real war. Even though there's war in the world and such, an fps game is pretty far removed from that for obvious reasons. How we (as real people) talk and what we say in real time though - that is real. Everything has an effect.

Torture is non-specific.
But only people and resources get raped. Period.
It should not be a term for something positive, like playing well in an fps game.

I obviously see things differently than you do. Those who agree with me won't be too vocal about it because this opinion is clearly an unpopular one.

I was just aiming to make people think, if just one person. I'm not in this thread to argue and I won't do so any further.

This is just my opinion.

It is a widespread word in gaming. I am talking about it as an entirety, not because of what one person said.
It really isn't about my feelings.

But people will either get it, or they wont.

I edited my dirty word to make it less offensive.
The intent was to be very offensive though.
To illustrate the point I was making in my post.

I by no means condone using the **gger word.

That entire post explains why I'm so serious. Also, I said that word to illustrate my point.
Did you find it offensive? I do too.

Lets talk about the widely spread use of the word 'rape' in gamer lingo.

Yes, 90% of gamers use it. And yes, for most of those who use it, it has nothing to do with violent sexual assault.
It is merely a gamer term to be taken lightly. As far as jokes go, everything is fair game right?
This means we can joke about slavery, the holocaust, mass genocide, mental retardation, physical disability, farm murders, and rape. Right?
We all laugh, because it is easier to become desensitized to the horrors of this world.

Whenever I mention my distaste for the word 'rape' in the gamer world, I am met with remarks like 'oh now we know what happened to you' etc etc.
People assume that I have a problem with it because it has happened to me or because I know somebody it has happened to. This is not the case. I merely think that it is not a nice term to carelessly fling around in an environment where underage people and women play. I always call players out on their use of the word rape and derivatives thereof (butt raped etc) because it is a term that I would like to see dead in the gamer world.  It just perpetuates the perception that gamers are delinquent teenage boys of questionable moral fibre, salivating over internet porn. It is filthy.

Pappawheely brought this up in another thread - the replies on what he said made me feel that I should say something.
Because I feel very strongly about this.
It is not about protecting people's fragile little feelings. It is about being decent human beings. Some things can be joked about. Some things can't.
Maybe it is because we live in such a crime-riddled country that these things are serious to us.
But as one member suggested, we are not that young.  We might be, by your standards. But we also know what is right and good and what is not.

Thankfully, I have not encountered this term often on NRNS. The person who said it in the first place ended up censoring it.
I am not attacking you or hating on you mate. I am just explaining my point of view. So that people might think a bit further than what is right in front of them.
NRNS wants quality people. So lets be quality people.
This world will never  improve if we continue to make the unacceptable acceptable becasue urban dictionary says it is cool.

Nobody thinks it's cool to call somebody a **gger faggot in a server. So why would it be cool to rape all players?

Hows your sister?
She's OK! She's getting raped all the time these days by those guys in COD4!

Think about it.

Thanks for reading,

Moose
