Warning: Sensitive subject. I might offend.
« on: June 01, 2015, 20:21:55 PM »
Lets talk about the widely spread use of the word 'rape' in gamer lingo.

Yes, 90% of gamers use it. And yes, for most of those who use it, it has nothing to do with violent sexual assault.
It is merely a gamer term to be taken lightly. As far as jokes go, everything is fair game right?
This means we can joke about slavery, the holocaust, mass genocide, mental retardation, physical disability, farm murders, and rape. Right?
We all laugh, because it is easier to become desensitized to the horrors of this world.

Whenever I mention my distaste for the word 'rape' in the gamer world, I am met with remarks like 'oh now we know what happened to you' etc etc.
People assume that I have a problem with it because it has happened to me or because I know somebody it has happened to. This is not the case. I merely think that it is not a nice term to carelessly fling around in an environment where underage people and women play. I always call players out on their use of the word rape and derivatives thereof (butt raped etc) because it is a term that I would like to see dead in the gamer world.  It just perpetuates the perception that gamers are delinquent teenage boys of questionable moral fibre, salivating over internet porn. It is filthy.

Pappawheely brought this up in another thread - the replies on what he said made me feel that I should say something.
Because I feel very strongly about this.
It is not about protecting people's fragile little feelings. It is about being decent human beings. Some things can be joked about. Some things can't.
Maybe it is because we live in such a crime-riddled country that these things are serious to us.
But as one member suggested, we are not that young.  We might be, by your standards. But we also know what is right and good and what is not.

Thankfully, I have not encountered this term often on NRNS. The person who said it in the first place ended up censoring it.
I am not attacking you or hating on you mate. I am just explaining my point of view. So that people might think a bit further than what is right in front of them.
NRNS wants quality people. So lets be quality people.
This world will never  improve if we continue to make the unacceptable acceptable becasue urban dictionary says it is cool.

Nobody thinks it's cool to call somebody a **gger faggot in a server. So why would it be cool to rape all players?

Hows your sister?
She's OK! She's getting raped all the time these days by those guys in COD4!

Think about it.

Thanks for reading,

Moose

Lol dude.

That entire post explains why I'm so serious. Also, I said that word to illustrate my point.
Did you find it offensive? I do too.

I edited my dirty word to make it less offensive.
The intent was to be very offensive though.
To illustrate the point I was making in my post.

I by no means condone using the **gger word.

The only thing my country can do in this case is to call your minister and ask him if he need a military support. Unfortunately , We and I can not do anything about it yet. Otherwise, It will be an invasion in your area.

South Africa is being run by a bunch of criminals, ask any south african.
How bad a country may want to help us fight crime our government will just decline. They love the chaos.
I can show you the chaos but its not a pretty picture, but its the reality here.

dont look at the madness if you dont want to.

here is some of it. a Boer is a white person in South Africa, well actually boer means farmer. I am one.

Offence cannot be given. It can only be taken. And even in that case, the line of argument is: "You hurt my feelings by using a word."
We use language in context. Saying "Oh, waiting in line at the bank was absolute torture." does not trivialise torture. Saying "We are getting completely base raped here." while playing a game does not trivialise rape or victims.

I don't particularly care about in-game phrases. In BF2 we have "no baserape" scrolling past every few minutes.
I often suspect that people who point this out have nothing better to do. Now, if there was an actual rape victim who was playing say BF2 and saw that word scroll past, I suspect the game council could deal with it. But let's cross that bridge when we get there.

PS.
Nothing cannot be joked about.

This is just my opinion.

It is a widespread word in gaming. I am talking about it as an entirety, not because of what one person said.
It really isn't about my feelings.

But people will either get it, or they wont.

I dont see a problem with the meaning of the word , i see a problem with things you want to associate it ... from my point of view that is your problem . Im not trying to be rude but this is a game and we are not here to educate underage people , even we would like to that is not our business we cant make the work of parents . If you wanna follow on that line the logical thing would be close the servers as we play war games , bf2 , cod .... isnt that apology of violence ????

Is not apology of the conflict between religions or politics ???? usmc vs mec , usmc vs china ???

Lets go to be a little bit consistent , problems in the world are what they are ... do you want help countrys in war or help poor countries where people dies because they dont have anything to eat .... go there and help them , try to fix the world while you are playing games is quite cynical and i would say that quite hypocrite .

That is not a personal critic just a reflexion

Look folks, it is just an opinion. One that is supposed to make people think.

We all know we are playing a game, and that it isn't real war. Even though there's war in the world and such, an fps game is pretty far removed from that for obvious reasons. How we (as real people) talk and what we say in real time though - that is real. Everything has an effect.

Torture is non-specific.
But only people and resources get raped. Period.
It should not be a term for something positive, like playing well in an fps game.

I obviously see things differently than you do. Those who agree with me won't be too vocal about it because this opinion is clearly an unpopular one.

I was just aiming to make people think, if just one person. I'm not in this thread to argue and I won't do so any further.
