You could use a boot disc to make sure the drive is functioning. If it is try a boot repair or rewrite the boot file (easybcd works nice), if it's not make sure the drive is connected, try a different port, or the drive just might have died. :|

:| Hope you kept backups. Mine died about 2 years ago... I still haven't recovered. There are all sorts of (very strange) home remedies you can try to get it working again (like putting the drive in the freezer). None of them worked in my case but maybe you'll have better luck. If it does miraculously start working again back up your stuff asap cause it could crash again at any moment.

90% of times HDDs die, they die as soon as you press the ON button.

They dont die while disconnected :D

Similar to lightbulbs maybe. 0 to 7.2k RPM in ~1second = lots of wear and tear. :|

HDD is easy to die on my PC. I destroyed many of it. I got similar experience was not a few times(error message is different). One case was because of crash, and other case was because of "some chenges on boot sector" But this is not sure , and also your case.
Now I am using SSD to boot. It seems to be good for 4 years.
