How to install DayZ

Since Steam has taken over from Gamespy since their shutdown, there's been confusion and a difficulty with installing and playing Dayz. I hope this step by step will help you install, play and join us on the server.

What do I need to play this mod?

•    Steam
•    Arma 2: Combined Operations (Arma II + Operation Arrowhead)
•    (You need to purchase these, there is no cracked versions, as Steam will need to verify your install and verify your CD Key is valid)
•     Run the game once before proceeding
•     Internet Connection
•     DayZ Mod Files (See below) or through DayZ COMMANDER (easiest way)
•     Balls

Step 1: Download and Install Steam, Create account

Step 2: Purchase Arma 2 and Arma2 Operation Arrowhead through STEAM or by Retail CD

Step 3: Install game into your Steam Directory
                          (usually C:\Progam Files (x86)\Steam\Steam Apps\common\)

Step 4:  Run both Arma2 and Arma2: Combined Operations once to complete installation.

Step 5: Download the latest version of DayZCommander from http://www.dayzcommander.com

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO RUN DAYZ THROUGH DAYZ COMMANDER YOU CAN INSTALL MANUALLY

• Download DayZ Mod files: http://dayzmod.com/?Download
• Make a folder named "@DayZ" in your Arma2 Operation Arrowhead folder
• Inside "@DayZ" folder create another folder named "Addons".
• Unpack all DayZ Mod files in the "Addons" folder.
• Start the game as instructed

Step 6: Run DayZCommander and click the "versions" button from the top menu.

Step 7:Click "Install latest version" under Arma2 OA. Wait for the download and install to complete. (If this does not work please see Note1 at bottom)

Step 8:   Click "Install v 1.8.2" under DayZ in MODS tab . Wait for the download and install to complete.  DO NOT DO LATEST UPDATE AS WE RUN V1.8.2
   
Step 9: Press "Done" to close the versions panel.
   
Step 10: Using Filter search for NRNS if not go to FAVOURITES and in the IP address in the upper left hand side put in  199.116.113.232 and port 2303   
   
Note1: if you find that you can't verify or update your ARMA 2 OA to latest patch through DayZ commander

• go to your STEAM menu
• Click on Games and select Games Library
• Right Click on Arma 2 and Arma 2 OA (one at a time)
• Select Properties
• Go to the Local Files tab and select Verify Integrity of Game Cache
• Steam will automatically verify and update your ARMA games.

DayZCommander is down. Other launchers (and the dayzmod.com site don't have V1.8.2). Can someone upload that mod version or point to another solution pls.

DayZ mode can also be installed thru steam !!
Need to reinstall and will be testing soon... server seems to be up and running.

I am totally new to that game. I never played the game before but saw videos on youtube. It seems interesting but a bit boring while you are drifting around the city. Anyways, is there a way to download game without buying it from the link you mentioned above ?
