Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 / MW2 Installation and connection guide (X Labs)

EDIT (July 2023): X Labs has shut down. Our hosted servers still function but the install guide here no longer works.

NRNS hosts a CoD:MW2 server via X Labs. To play on our server you'll need the game and iw4x files.

X Labs hosts a good install guide here: https://xlabs.dev/support_iw4x_client.html If you already have the game files and just need the iw4x files skip to the second install method.

Start the game by running iw4x.exe. The NRNS server should be listed in the server browser.

Hello. Welcome back. :)

The GameSpy shutdown definitely hurt the BF2 community but I think it was the Revive shutdown that put in that final nail. When Revive closed they released (false) notices that it would no longer be possible to play BF2 (at all) and defamed, kicked, and/or banned people who attempted to correct the notice.

As for our servers: Two of them run bots so they'll never be empty with at least 1 human in them. xD The bots are ... well bots after all, they can be tough at times but aren't quite the same as playing with humans (they're very good in a pinch though to scratch that BF2 itch). :)

Applied April 2 update. Server is now listed under the Modded section via search of 'NRNS'. Hopefully all the mods are still working.

To add to your points:

  • Check with your local health organization for local information and general tips but fall back on the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for more conclusive information.
  • Social distancing: Stay at least 6 feet (2 meters) away from everyone, not just people who are sneezing, coughing, or appear sick. Infected people can appear healthy but still transmit the virus.
  • Wash your hands vigorously (20 seconds with warm soapy water) often. If you need to touch your face or prepare food only do so directly after washing your hands.

My community (in California) is under 'shelter in place' restrictions until April. If you're in an area where the virus is being transmitted: Protect yourselves and just stay away from other people. Do your part to stop the spread of this and other viruses. If everyone stays away from everyone else the virus will stop being transmitted.

Edit: Unfortunately it looks like Microsoft requires some payment method on file to claim free games.  :'(

Anyone know a way around that?

The installer works with the Steam version too (though I'd recommend copying the files to a different location first). Just run the installer from the top KillingFloor folder (ie: '/SteamApps/common/KillingFloor/KF-UpDater_SUNRISE.exe'). Running the installer this way resulted in about a 200 MB download instead of the 6GB+ for all the game files.

Changing in-game name can be done via the NameChanger.exe file or the rev.ini file in the top KillingFloor folder. The rev.ini file is also how you can change the in-game interface (menu) language.

Adding a server to favorites can be done by choosing Multiplayer from the main menu, then Favorites. Right click in the favorites list and click 'Add to Favorites'. Enter the IP address (NRNS is 192.95.55.248) and click OK.

The revive install steps can be distilled to:
  • Install: Get the installer. Run it. Make sure you input your key or let the installer give you a random one.
  • Update: Let the installer update punkbuster.


If you want to play online you'll need a launcher (because native online support was removed a while back). We use BF2Hub. BF2Hub's install steps can be distilled to:
  • Install: Get the installer. Run it.
  • Patch: Use BF2Hub client to patch your BF2 install.


Game is ready to play online on BF2Hub enabled servers. Use your BF2Hub account to login.

What's confusing about it? I always thought the method in our install guide was very easy (single file, single step (essentially install and play)). :|

In any case, the guide lists a second method with a link to alternative download/install methods.
