Try some bright colours maybe? Green , Amber Yellow ,  Cyan . Harvest Gold , Blue :D . Is it possible that you can make some sample of our homepage with different colours , would be very easy to decide which one looks good .

BF4 icon, BF3 icon ,and BF2.......etc. New setup is easier to distinguish  :)

Who designed the "NRNS Christmas version" ?
That was the greatest design I have ever seen in the world !!
I can answer the reason  :'( :'( 

I want to see it in next Christmas again :) :)

My first thought when going to NRNS home page every time is, "omg what's wrong!?!" Then I realize it's the sever display and I think, "oh, that's cool." Then a few hours later, when I visit again ... same thing ... it's that red color, to me it means, "DANGER" or "Something is wrong/down." Other than that i think it's great.

Maybe a nice light green would be better? "Green means 'Good'. Green means, 'Go'."

I agree with SirGuySW, another background colour would be better in my opinion. Either transparent or a light green might be worth a try.
